Membership and magazine arrived

I finally signed up for AARP membership after turning 50. Got the welcome kit and the first magazine in the mail pretty quick, maybe took 10 days total after I joined online. I haven't used any of the discounts yet, but it seems like there are a lot of options. It felt good to finally get it done.

Good for insurance savings

I've been an AARP member for years now, and I just renewed my membership again last month. I originally joined for the insurance savings, specifically the Medicare Supplement Insurance, which has consistently saved me a good amount compared to other options. This time I also looked into their Homeowners Insurance. The process for renewing was straightforward, just like in previous years. Their website is pretty easy to navigate, and my new card arrived in about a week. It's a reliable organization, which is why I keep coming back every year.

Membership and travel discounts

I signed up for an AARP membership mostly for the travel benefits. The hotel booking discounts were decent for a recent trip I planned, but not always the absolute lowest price I could find, especially compared to some direct hotel promotions. The process to join online was easy enough, and I got my digital card right away. However, it took almost two weeks to get the physical welcome kit and magazine, which felt a bit slow. I did use the Prescription Discount Card once, and that saved me a few dollars, so that was a nice bonus. Overall, it's a good value for the membership fee, but I wish the travel savings were a little more competitive across the board.

Anyone know how long it takes to get the AARP welcome kit in the mail? Just signed up and wondering when I'll get my card and everything.

O Omar Reyes 2 months ago
Mine took about 2 weeks I think? Not super fast but not forever either.

Yeah, a couple of weeks sounds right. You usually get access to the digital card pretty quick though, so you can start using some discounts online right away while you wait for the physical one.

Is there a trick to getting the best deal on AARP membership? Saw something about 5-year plans or something. Want to make sure I'm not missing out.

C Cleo Romero 2 months ago
Definitely go for the multi-year plan if you can, it's usually cheaper per year. And sometimes they throw in a free gift if you sign up for longer.

Keep an eye out around the end of the year, like Nov/Dec. They often have bigger discounts then. Also, if you renew, sometimes they give you a better rate than new members get.

What's the deal with their prescription discount card? Is it any good, or should I just stick with my insurance?

T Troy 2 months ago
Honestly, sometimes the AARP card beats my insurance copay. It's worth checking both, especially for generic meds. Just ask the pharmacy to run both and see which is cheaper.

I've saved a good bit using it for things my insurance doesn't cover as well, or for meds that have a high deductible. It's not always a huge saving but every little bit helps, right?

Can I really add my spouse for free to my AARP membership? That sounds too good to be true.

J James 1 month ago
Yep, it's true! My husband is on mine and didn't pay extra. It's one of their perks.

Yeah, they let you add a second household member for free. It's legit. They'll both get cards and access to stuff, but it's all under one primary membership.

I'm under 50 but my mom says I can still join AARP? Is that true, or do you have to wait?

M Mia 1 month ago
You can! My friend joined when she was 48 because her husband was over 50. They don't actually check super strict for the primary member's age as long as you're close or have an older spouse.

Yeah, you can join at any age, they just market it to 50+. No rule saying you HAVE to be 50 to sign up and get the benefits. I know people who joined in their 40s.

Hey, I'm thinking about joining AARP but not sure if it's really worth it for someone just turning 50. What kind of benefits do you actually use?

A Alex 2 months ago
Oh yeah, totally worth it! I just joined last year and the discounts on travel have already saved me a bunch. Plus the magazine is actually pretty good.

For me, it's the insurance stuff and the prescription card. Saved a ton on my meds last month, and their supplemental Medicare info was super helpful. You don't have to use everything, just pick what's good for you.
